Staythorpe had two 360 MW Power Stations side by side on the River Trent just three miles south of Newark.
Staythorpe ‘B’ was built downstream of the ‘A’ Station and they were separated by the Main Stores and a car park. The contrast between the two stations couldn’t have been greater.
‘A’ Station was an old fashioned pre-war brick built design. ‘B’ station was a very modern by comparison and had the layout of most modern power stations that followed.
Both stations took cooling water from the river and discharged it into a flume that ran along the river front. ‘B’ Station had two cooling towers south of the ‘A’ Station but they were never needed as the River Trent was quite large in that area.
Although very different, both stations were very successful in their own way.
