Spondon A – Boilers

The Original Boiler House 1 was built between 1916 to 1918 to supply steam to the two 6MW Turbines. It was scrapped in the late 30’s to make way for the new Boiler House 1.

Boiler House 2 consisted of 8 – 40,000 lb/hour Babcock and Wilcox chain grate boilers and was constructed in the mid 1920’s. It was scrapped in the early 1970’s.

Boiler House 3 consisted of 8 – 80,000 lb/hour Babcock and Wilcox chain grate boilers and was constructed in 1929/30.

The new Boiler House 1 consisted of 6 – 80,000 lb/hour Babcock and Wilcox chain grate boilers and was constructed between 1935 to 1944.

All the Boilers at Spondon `A’ were built with their own individual chimneys. However, in the 1950’s a 350foot concrete chimney was built behind Boiler House 1. All the Boiler exhaust gasses from Boiler House 1’s six boilers were ducted into the new chimney in an attempt to improve the local air quality.
