Drakelow `B’ power station. No 5 (the first) generator unit was commissioned on the 24th April 1959 followed by the final No 8 generator unit being commissioned in December 1960. The station had an total generation capacity of 480 MW consisting of four 120MW Parsons turbo alternators, three of which were supplied with steam from their associated Foster Wheeler reheat boilers. No 5 reheat boiler was built by I.C.L.
`B’ station was designed to harmonise with `A’ station in its layout, construction materials and other architectural features. The two stations were built in line and joined with common administration buildings containing the electrical control room.
`B’ station closed in 1993 but was left mothballed until asbestos stripping and demolition commenced in 1997. The cooling towers were finally demolished in 1998.
