Drakelow A Power Station

Drakelow `A’ power station was formally opened on October 21st 1955 by Mr J. Eccles, C.B.E., deputy chairman (Operations) of the Central Electricity Authority.  It had an total generation capacity of 240MW made up of four 60MW English Electric turbo alternators with four associated ICL PF fired boilers.  At the time of the formal opening three of the units were generating with the fourth still under construction.

`A’ station closed in 1984 but the main brick built structure was kept for storage. This was then demolished as part of the `B’ station demolition programme in 1997.
