Spondon A – Turbines

The original two 6 MW Turbines 1 & 2 ran at 1500rpm and generated at  6.6KV.  Make unknown. They were scrapped in the late 30’s to make way for the new Turbines 1 & 2

No’s 3 & 4 Generators were 12 & 15MW BTH Turbines installed in 1923 & 1926. They were scrapped in the early 1970’s

No 5 Generator was a 25MW BTH Turbine installed in 1929.

No 6 Generator was a 30MW BTH Turbine installed in 1930.

No 7 Generator was a 30MW BTH Turbine installed in 1935

No 1 Generator was a 30MW BTH Turbine installed in 1939

No 2 Generator was a 30MW BTH Turbine installed in 1944

No 6 Turbine, although rated 30MW wasn’t as efficient as Turbines 1, 2 & 7 which used noticeably less steam to do full load. For some strange reason Generators 6 & 7 were installed 90deg to the other turbine’s and overlapped side by side.

All the BTH Turbines had 10 Nozzle control governor valves mounted in a steam chest on the top half of the HP Cylinders. Two of these nozzle valves were a bypass feeding steam further down the HP cylinder.
